The Poolside

Water sloshed as Dad
Raised his hands from the depths
and clapped them in my direction
“Jump to me!”
He said.

Quivering, I stood by the poolside
Not keen on the idea
Of my feet leaving the
solid pavement for the
liquid pool

But at his urging, at last
I jumped
Not because I’m an excellent jumper
Or because the water is safe
But because I trust Dad.

And he caught me.

This poem is part of my April Poetry Challenge. In honor of National Poetry Month this year, I'm writing lots of poetry and posting a new poem every day in April! Read more of my poetry here.
